EJel (이젤), also known as Chang Eun Jeong (장은정) and formerly known as Augusteng (어거스탱), is a South Korean singer-songwriter under MNH Entertainment.[1] She made her solo debut on October 31, 2024 with her first digital single "A N E W".
She is known for being a contestant on the survival shows Folk Us, where she finished in the semi-final top 8, Show Queen, where she finished in the semi-final top 16, and Sing Again 3, where she finished in third place.
She also won a bronze award at the 33rd Yoo Jae Ha Music Contest, became a winning top 10 artist of the Muse On 2024 competition, and finished in fifth place in the final round of the Indiestance 2025 competition.
On October 31, 2025, she released her first mini album With a Green Backpack.
Career[]
2020–2021: YouTube covers, Folk Us[]
On January 2, 2020, she started posting covers on her YouTube channel under the stage name Augusteng (어거스탱). The first video she uploaded was an acoustic cover of "Stay" by Post Malone and "Lost Stars" by Adam Levine & Keira Knightley.[2]
On November 20, she started competing as a contestant on the Mnet folk music survival show Folk Us under her birth name Chang Eun Jeong (장은정). She passed the first round after performing "With the Heart to Forget You" by Kim Kwang Seok in the first episode.[3]
On December 11, during the second round, she performed "Autumn Letter" by Choi Yang Sook in the fourth episode with Gong Ye Bin (also known as Yebit). They passed the round after winning their duet battle against Choi Yu Ree & Seo Ja Yeong.[4][5]
On January 1, 2021, she performed "Really Really" by WINNER in the seventh episode, where the contestants went busking.[6]
On January 8, she passed the third round after performing "In Addition to the Name of Love" by Boohwal in the eighth episode in a battle against Gong Ye Bin.[7][8]
On January 15, during the top 8 semi-final round, she performed "Goodbye" by Sanullim in the ninth episode.[9] She was eliminated after finishing in sixth place at the end of the round since the final round would only include the top 4 contestants.
On January 22, she appeared in the 10th & final episode of the show for a special group performance. She performed "Two People" by Sung Si Kyung with Gong Ye Bin. Then, they performed "Beautiful World" by Yurisangja with other returning contestants Wussami, Park Woo Jeong, Yu Seung Woo, Kim Suyoung, and judge Park Haki.[10]
2022–2024: 33rd Yoo Jae Ha Music Contest, Show Queen, stage name change, Sing Again 3, debut with "A N E W"[]
On November 12, 2022, she competed in the final round of the 33rd Yoo Jae Ha Music Contest. She won a bronze award for her song "After This Blue Summer" when the final results were announced.[11]
On April 7, 2023, she performed "After This Blue Summer" and an unreleased song called "How to Love My 22" at the 33rd Yoo Jae Ha Music Contest winners' celebration concert.[12][13]
On May 12, she started competing to be on the TV Chosun survival show Show Queen. She performed "Love Always Runs Away" by Lee Moon Sae during the preliminary round that was shown on YouTube and Naver TV before the show premiered.[14]
On June 12, it was announced that she would be one of the 60 contestants appearing on the show after she passed the preliminary round.[15] The first episode aired on June 18.
On June 25, in the second episode, the results of the first round were summarized and she was shown as one of the contestants who passed the round, but her segment did not air. It was later revealed that she passed with all seven votes from the judges after performing "Between Love and Friendship" by Pinocchio. Her full performance was uploaded on the show's YouTube channel almost two years after the show ended.[16]
On July 2, in the third episode, she performed a team medley of four songs during the second round: "아침의 나라에서" by Kim Yon Ja, "마음 약해서" by The Wild Cats, "Heartbreaking" by Nam Jin, and "Balloons" by Five Fingers. Her teammates were Jeon Hyo Jin, Kim Su Min, Lee Na Bin, Moon Se Yeong, and Yoon Sun Jung.[17] On July 9, in the fourth episode, she passed the second round after receiving one of the additional passes from the judges at the end of the round.
On July 24, she passed the third round after performing "어느 날 문득" by Jung Su Ra in the sixth episode in a battle against Han Hye Jung.[18][19]
On July 31, during the top 16 semi-final round, she performed "To My Old Friend" by Travel Skeches in the seventh episode.[20] She was eliminated after finishing in 14th place at the end of the round since the final round would only include the top 7 contestants.
On September 11, she announced that she changed her stage name from Augusteng to EJel (이젤).[21]
On October 10, she was identified as the contestant SingAgain3 Singer No.66 (싱어게인3 66호 가수) on the JTBC survival show Sing Again 3.[22] The first episode aired on October 26.
On November 2, she passed the first round with all eight votes from the judges after performing "Why So Lonely" by Wonder Girls in the second episode.[23]
On November 16, during the second round, she performed "The Girl in My Memories" by Hwang Chi Hoon in the fourth episode with leejean.[24] They passed the round after winning their duet battle against Raina & Jun Ha Young with all eight votes from the judges.[25]
On November 30, during the third round, she performed "Run Devil Run" by Girls' Generation in the sixth episode in a battle against leejean.[26] Their battle ended in a tie, so the judges had to have a discussion to decide the winner of the battle. They ended up picking leejean as the winner of the battle, so she passed the round, and EJel became an elimination candidate.[27] On December 7, in the seventh episode, EJel passed the round after she received one of the additional passes from the judges at the end of the round.[28]
On December 14, during the fourth round, she performed "Tokyo Girl" by Kim Kwang Jin in the eighth episode.[29] She passed the round after receiving the second most votes from the judges in a battle against So Soo Bin, Kim Suyoung, and Tejong.[30]
On December 28, during the naming ceremony for the semi-final top 10 contestants, she performed her song "After This Blue Summer" in the 10th episode.[31] Then, she passed the semi-final round after performing "No One" by Lee Hi & B.I and winning a battle against Horim for a spot in the top 7 final round.[32][33]
On January 11, 2024, during the first part of the final round in the 12th episode, she performed a new song called "Lonely" that was produced by Rocoberry & LAS.[34] She was also part of a special group performance during the episode. She performed "Ice Fortress" by Dear Cloud with So Soo Bin, leejean, and Sing Again 2 finalists Kim So Yeon & Lee Ju Hyuk.[35]
On January 18, during the second part of the final round in the 13th episode, she performed "Time of Our Life" by DAY6.[36] At the end of the episode, it was announced that EJel finished in third place in the final round of the show.[37] She received a prize of ₩30,000,000 in music activity funding, and she also received a sofa from the show's sponsor Jakomo.[38] She would also be participating in the show's concert tour from March 9 to August 10 with the rest of the top 10 contestants: Isaac Hong, So Soo Bin, Shin Haesol, leejean, Kang Sunghee, Choo Seungyoup, Horim, Lim Jisoo, and Chae Bo Hoon.[39]
On February 17, the top 7 contestants appeared as guests in the 421st episode of the JTBC variety show Knowing Bros. During the episode, EJel performed SUPER JUNIOR's song "Devil", Hwang Chi Hoon's "The Girl in My Memories" with leejean, and Cool's "All for You" with Heechul of SUPER JUNIOR.[40][41][42] She also revealed that she had previously auditioned to join various agencies including SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, YG Entertainment, & MYSTIC STORY, and she was an unaired contestant in the first round of the 2016 SBS survival show K-pop Star 6: The Last Chance.[43]
On March 6, the Sing Again 3 spin-off show Famous Singers and Street Judges (also known as Famous Singers 3) premiered with the top 7 contestants and Lee Seung Gi & Kyuhyun as the cast members. The show concluded on May 15 with 10 episodes.
During the show, EJel performed Zoo's song "In Front of City Hall at the Subway Station", Kim Kwang Seok's "Please Wait for Me" with Kang Sunghee, Sunflower's "Come on Tell Me", TVXQ!'s "Hug", Choi Ho Seob's "As Time Goes By" with So Soo Bin, TWICE's "Fancy", Yang Yoseop's "Caffeine" with leejean, and George's "Let's Go Picnic".[44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51]
On May 23, she was announced as one of the top 20 artists who applied to be part of the annual Muse On competition created by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) to discover and promote new artists. The final top 10 artists of the competition for 2024 would be determined by a performance evaluation on a later date. The benefits for winning a spot in the top 10 included album release support, music broadcast & festival appearances, live clip production, and profile photoshoots.[52][53] For the performance evaluation, she performed an unreleased song called "Reason".[54]
On June 11, after the performance evaluation was complete, EJel, Touched, Otis Lim, Red C, g0nny, Kimseungjoo, SamSan, Kim Neuk, Yeonjeong, and Min Cloudia were announced as the Muse On competition's winning top 10 artists for 2024.[55][56][57]
On September 13, she was a guest on the MBC M television show Picnic Live. She performed "Butter" by BTS, "Atlantis Princess" by BoA and "Time of Our Life" by DAY6 in the 132nd episode.[58][59][60]
On September 14, she released the song "Now, Love" as the seventh part of the Cinderella at 2AM OST.[61]
On October 31, she made her official solo debut with the release of her first digital single "A N E W" and its title track "Now or Never".
On November 10, she released the song "The Story of Us (Female Version)" which was included in the fifth part of the A Virtuous Business OST.[62]
On November 18, her performances as a guest on the JTBC variety show Begin Again Open Mic started to be released on YouTube on a weekly basis until December 9. She performed her song "Now or Never", Julia Michaels' "Issues" with Pharita of BABYMONSTER, Baek A's "Amor" with Jukjae, DAY6's "Congratulations", and Billie Eilish's "Birds of a Feather".[63][64][65][66][67]
On November 22, she appeared as a guest in the eighth episode of the KBS2 variety show The Seasons: Rainbow of Lee Young Ji. She performed "Sugarcoat" by Natty of KISS OF LIFE during the episode.[68][69]
2025: King of Mask Singer, "Anti-Spring", "Loyal Girl", Indiestance 2025, With a Green Backpack, Global Veiled Musician, Surely Tomorrow OST[]
On January 26, 2025, she started competing as the masked singer Sunrise (해돋이) in the 238th tournament of the MBC singing competition program King of Mask Singer. In the 480th episode, she passed the first round after performing "Love Is Like a Glass" by Won Junhee and winning in a battle against Baek Bong-ki.[70]
On February 2, in the 481st episode, she passed the second round after performing "Romantic Cat" by Cherryfilter and winning in a battle against Wonjin of CRAVITY.[71] During the episode, Code Kunst, who was a judge on Sing Again 3, gave the panel hints about EJel's masked identity.[72] During the third round, she performed "In Dreams" by Lena Park.[73] She was unmasked after she was defeated in a battle against Taehyun of DickPunks (DPNS).[74]
On March 28, she released her second digital single "Anti-Spring".
On April 4, she uploaded a lyric video for her unreleased song "Reason" on her YouTube channel.[75]
On June 24, she was announced as one of the artists who passed the preliminary video screening process to compete in the top 30 round of the Gyeonggi Content Agency's Indiestance 2025 competition that would take place on July 5 & 6.[76]
On June 30, she released her third digital single "Loyal Girl", which features Lee Seoyeon.
On July 8, she was announced as one of the artists who advanced to the Indiestance 2025 top 10 round scheduled for August 10 after she passed the top 30 round.[77] During the top 30 round, she performed "After This Blue Summer" and an unreleased song called "Lock Me Up".[78]
On July 28, she started appearing as a cast member on fencer Kim Jun-ho's sports variety show Fencing Military Academy which was filmed at Raffine Kim's Fencing Club with announcer Lee Yun-jung, former BB GIRLS member Nam Youjoung, and actress Han Jae In. The show concluded on September 2 with six episodes.[79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89]
On August 10, she passed the top 10 round of Indiestance 2025 after performing two unreleased songs called "OhashiTrio" & "Hate U, Love U", and she advanced to the top 5 final round which would be on September 20 at the 2025 Gyeonggi Inmufe.[90][91][92]
On September 20, she performed her unreleased songs "Twelve", "How to Love My 22", & "Hate U, Love U" in the final round of Indiestance 2025, and finished in fifth place.[93][94]
On September 28, she released the song "Within Me" as part of the Indiestance 2025 compilation album.[95]
On October 31, she released her first mini album With a Green Backpack.
On November 4, she was identified as the contestant performing "Bad News" by KISS OF LIFE in a teaser for the SBS & Netflix survival show Global Veiled Musician.[96] The full performance aired during the second episode on November 19, and she passed the first audition round competing as the veiled musician 여의도동 쓰리스타.[97]
On November 28, an audio preview was released for the song "매일 이렇게" that EJel will be releasing as part of the Surely Tomorrow OST.[98]
